With over 50 years of ministry and community service, Tabernacle Church, located just outside Nashville, in Clarksville Tennessee, decided in 2017 that to keep up with their tremendous growth, they would undergo a monumental change with a grand new construction project, to reemerge as Mosaic Church—adding 65,000 square feet to their campus, including a 1,500 seat performance space. When audio and integration firm, Holly Media was asked to oversee the expansion of the performance space, owner Fred Holly, with over 30 years of pro audio experience, led the design effort. “With new dynamics and changing needs, the scope of the ministry has changed—it’s become a new work,” said Holly. “Tabernacle seemed old fashioned. The name didn’t match the demographic of our church because it’s very diverse—and it’s thriving. The new Mosaic Church wanted to reflect that.” The original structure was a smaller sanctuary [about 200 seats] and was insufficient space for many years. The church adapted for larger congregations by expanding Sunday services to four per day. Recently through COVID, the church was mobile, moving its worship service to a local high school, setting up and tearing down in the parking lot each week. Aside from general construction, Holly focused mainly on the performance space, and the subsequent procurement of an audio system and its installation. “Early on with my ideas for the shape of the room, I didn’t want to encounter any problems later on. I wanted the diffusion to be completely natural — with the splay of the walls and installing surface treatment. Not only does Holly Media tackle the challenges between space design and installing sound systems, Holly pulled in one of his trusted resources for advanced surface techniques and sound dampening. “Usually when clients show me plans for a church, it’s obvious architects know nothing about acoustics,” said Jay Perdue, owner and designer at Perdue Acoustics, and the lead instructor of architectural acoustics at InfoComm University. “They’re more focused on what it’s going to look like versus what it’s going to sound like.” Upon first glance, Perdue knew something about this new space was very unique. “When I first saw the room design, I thought Fred really did his homework,’ said Perdue. “The shape of the room was very nice with no corners to deal with. I checked all the parallelisms and found slap back on the back wall was a non-issue. I not only check a room for echo and reverberation, I conduct intelligibility testing as well. After a 13-point check throughout the space, it has the flattest response I’ve ever seen.” Holly has worked with most major audio brands and was looking for a sound system to deliver. “Being in this business for as long as I have, I’ve come from the old school thinking that having a solid, heavy box would also give solid frequency response — or a chance at it,” said Holly. “At first I thought to spec a JBL V 20 rig, but in the spirit of transformation, I wanted to find something new.” When Holly was referred to RCF and was introduced to Jim Reed [RCF product specialist and system designer] his curiosity was piqued. “When we spoke, Jim said he was willing to demo an RCF TT rig personally, he had my attention.” noted Holly. “I sent him the final room schematic and he returned an EASE drawing, and I was like, ‘when can you come’? [laughs] I was very excited about the possibilities.” Reed put together a complete system which included: 16 [2x8] TTL 55-A active line array modules, four companion TTS 56-AS active subwoofers, two TT 25-CXA active floor monitors, and four TT 20-CXA active monitors for the stage. For added coverage, Reed also added nine HDL 26-A active line arrays for center and front fills for added coverage. At the helm is an Allen & Health dLive s7000 mixing console. “Pulling everything out of the box, I was pleasantly surprised at the weight of it [TTL 55-A module]. The stuff is hardcore, man [laughs]. I’m an old military guy, so I know that if it’s heavy, it must be expensive.” Once all the products were out of their boxes and flown, Holly was also surprised at the time it took to test the sound system.

Edison, New Jersey—King Lear, an epic tale written by William Shakespeare, could be argued as being one of his best stories next to Hamlet. Considered by many to be the greatest tragedy ever written, King Lear is an epic tale of sorrow, forgiveness, madness, and reconciliation of family. Shakespeare’s timeless ability to portray characters who are powerful and complex, has also masterfully demonstrated the “music of language” through his work. What once was a 300-seat movie theatre Bristol Riverside Theatre (BRT) is located in the historic district of Bristol Borough in Eastern Pennsylvania. The theatre itself, built in 1937 and reopened as a performance hall in 1986, is well-known for bringing local and national artists to the stage, producing over 200 performances each year. Earlier this year, BRT invited Eric Tucker, of New York City’s acclaimed Bedlam Theatre to direct the production of King Lear with a fresh interpretation of the Shakespearean classic. The show ran for several weeks, starting January 28th and ending February 16, 2020.

Sberbank is the largest bank in Russia and a leading international financial institution. It is Russia’s most valuable brand and one of the top 25 brands in the world. Sberbank has 11 regional banks that are responsible for the operations of more than 14,000 branches in 83 of Russia’s regions. RCF’s Russian distributor ARIS and Polymedia equipped the central office’s entrance zone with a sound system for background broadcasting and vocal announcements. “The main goal was to equip the entrance zone of the central office with a sound system for background music and vocal announcements and a mobile system for events. Glass walls and the abundance of reflective surfaces are the real acoustic challenge of this project,” says Alexandr Shamray, Sales Director of Aris. “We decided to implement a steerable vertical array RCF VSA 850 MKII and the point source wall speakers RCF MQ 30P-W.” The installation extends to more than 750 square meters covering the waiting area, self-service area, thematic exhibitions, meeting and customer service areas, access control zone, and the balcony. “The RCF VSA 850 II column is a vertical controlled array with eight amplifiers and eight 3.5 inches speakers,” says Dmitry Semenov, Lead Project Manager of Polymedia “VSA 850 II provides accurate sound directivity to the listening area. Using RCF’s RDNet software, you can control the radiation pattern by controlling the width and inclination of the sound beam, which allows you to accurately articulate our audio sources .” The miniature two-way coaxial sound projector RCF MQ 30P is ideal for complex architectural solutions,” continues Shamray “The loudspeaker features high intelligibility and a wide frequency range to ensure background music is smooth. The integrated support makes it easy to mount the speaker to a wall or ceiling and orient it in any direction. It’s compact and looks great, perfect for our application.” As a mobile speaker system, the RCF D-LINE line array series was proposed. “The HDL 30-A with HDL 38-AS became the absolute right decision for Polymedia. “The HDL-30 has the necessary sound pressure level and sufficient headroom for these rooms and RDNet control helps to quickly achieve a good result”. states Semenov.

The rap genre has recently been resurrected as the mainstream music in India. Hip-hop artist and rapper Divine, aka Vivian Fernandes, one of the pioneers of the underground Indian hip-hop rap scene, is creating a buzz across the nation with his hard-hitting tracks. In 2019, Divine notably contributed to the soundtrack of Bollywood’s blockbuster musical drama film Gully Boy, inspired by his (and peer Naezy’s) street rapper days. With his knack for penning his own hits songs, along with an electrifying live act, along with meticulous flow, and his approachable persona, Divine has become hugely popular since founding the Gully Gang. Chennai recently witnessed his high-adrenaline show at Phoenix Market Chennai Courtyard. Along with DJ JD, and rapper Shaw Rule, Divine’s Gully Gang captivated the crowd with his popular numbers. Soundgear from Chennai were the rental partner who provided an RCF HDL series PA for the event. “We have been in the pro-audio and lighting rental services for the past 12 years. Our main focus is on live sound reinforcement and we handle a lot of live bands and artists, music festivals, corporate gigs and weddings,” says Balaji, Director of Soundgear. He continues, “For the Gully Gang show, we deployed 12 RCF HDL-50A and 12 SUB 8006-AS for FOH. Additionally for both centre fills and delay, six RCF HDL 20-A per side have been deployed for more even coverage across the 2,000 capacity venue. Our client, Phoenix Chennai & Times of India, appreciated our efforts and the band’s sound engineer, Adhiraj Singh, who had the pleasure of operating the system, had nothing but good things to say about it.”

When the £84m International Convention Centre Wales (ICCW) opened in September last year, it was not only the first of its kind in Wales, but this joint venture between the Welsh Government and the Celtic Manor Resort has delivered an astonishing 26,000 sq.m. of floor space for meetings, conferences and exhibitions (the size of four international rugby pitches). Incorporated within this is a 4,000 sq.m., pillar-free, multi-reconfigurable main hall, which threw up many challenges for technology contractors, Stage Electrics. Their solution was to specify an end-to-end workflow from the extensive RCF catalogue, tying nearly 800 speaker products (and over 1,000 RCF components in total) into a multi-use PA in the main hall and mobile systems for the meeting rooms, merged into a fully-compliant PAVA environment. Stage Electrics were awarded the contract for A/V, lighting (including public space), technical loose equipment and stage engineering consultancy, as outlined by Russell Phillips, VP, Facilities and Development at Celtic Manor. But first Simon Cooper, who led Stage Electrics’ engineering team, along with Business Development Manager Saul Eagles, needed to initiate a stringent, but uncompromising cost-cutting programme to bring it into budget. Stage Electrics have enjoyed enormous success installing RCF systems into a wide range of applications for over 15 years, as Dan Aldridge, their Commercial & Projects Director, points out.

The RCF catalogue extends the installation range at Integrated Systems Europe, assisting the architect and installer with application-focused series of high-quality products. The new RCF BUSINESS MUSIC line offers a complete range of products enabling Commercial Audio systems to be designed for both background and foreground music. It is conceived for all applications that require high audio quality, flexibility, and scalable architecture, allowing the distribution of different audio feeds in different environments, each with specific volume and equalization needs. It is the perfect solution from small to large installations, combining uncompromised sound quality, full processing features, exceptional power, easy configuration, and high scalability. The target application range is extremely wide and varies from retail stores to bars and restaurants, meeting rooms, education or public facilities, and in general to any A/V application. The new BUSINESS MUSIC line includes both Amplifiers and Speakers, with the aim of offering complete sound solutions and maximization of the overall acoustic performance. Amplifiers feature an extremely compact size (1/2 rack unit width and 1 rack unit height) making them ideal for both desktop and rack installation (with the dedicated optional accessory). Their accurate design, together with environmental robustness (IP 30 protection grade and high-efficiency thermal dissipation), represents a crossover point between professional and consumer markets. There are two Digital Mixer Amplifiers models, the DMA 82 (2 x 80W) and DMA 162 (2 x 160W), combining a powerful DSP platform with recallable speaker presets. These are factory-created and available on the website so that the user only has to set parameters for the environment rather than the speakers. The configuration is either via the front panel with a dedicated user interface and OLED display or RDNet, using the optional board, while it will also be possible to control some of the features of the device from third-party systems via a serial protocol to integrate with other systems. Finally, DMA can distribute four audio channels to satellite DPA units, allowing easy installation and scalable architecture. With on-board signal processing, the DPA 162 can be used to increase the installed power and build multi- room architecture after receiving a processed audio signal from the four-channel bus on just a single CAT5 cable BUS (with local stereo input alternative). Routing to power outputs can easily be affected via the DIP switch, while configuration can also be carried out using RDNet. Each unit can receive two mono or a single stereo channel from the 4-channel audio bus, with a local stereo input as an alternative. It also has a line output for the subwoofer. Expanding the features further are the RC 401 Remote Control and the BM 404 Paging Console. They can be used in conjunction with the DMA units. RC 401 offers basic Volume Control and Source Select; BM 404 can manage up to four zones, with up to four paging consoles connected in a daisy-chain fashion, interlocked. Speakers offer an acoustic performance inspired by RCF’s top-of-the-line audio products and high-value industrial design features. MF 33EN is a ceiling speaker designed for recess installation in false ceilings or panels. For wall mount installation, WMF 33EN speaker is available. While being a high-quality device for background music, the self-extinguishing EN54-24 certified cabinet and the highly intelligible voice reproduction make it perfect for voice-alarm and evac messages. RCF has also produced two Monitor speaker models — the MR 40T and MR 50T, both 2-way bass reflex speakers. Unlike their predecessors, these are now sold in pairs (in either white or black), with special bracketry designed for wall mounting, either individually or in clusters of four. Also on display, with five passive speakers models ranging from 5” to 12” woofer size, the COMPACT M series is perfectly suited to every environment with its sleek and neutral design, providing excellent acoustic performance for both background and foreground music, alone or accompanied by the 10-inch SUB S 10 and the 12-inch SUB S 12 subwoofers, delivering output power normally achievable with larger cabinets. The RCF booth will also feature RDNet compatible VSA II Vertical Steerable Array models, with improved quality for highly reverberant spaces and a new additional black color and the new TT 4 series, with three new rider friendly speakers designed to deliver top quality sound for highly demanding events, both indoors or outdoors, small to medium sized areas and high quality installations. Its design provides the audio engineer with the best tonal balance and intelligibility while offering different design options, both in vertical and horizontal arrangement. TTL 4-A (line array), TTW 4-A (wide dispersion) and TTP 4-A (point source) are equipped with 2 x 10” LF woofers and high performance 4.0" compression driver on a rotatable/swappable waveguide. The TTL 4-A waveguide is 100° x 25°, the TTW 4-A offers 100° x 50° dispersion and the TTP 4- A is 60° x 25°. All models are powered by 2 x 800W RMS Class D amplifiers.
