For more than 100 years the family-run Tennants Auctioneers have been hosting international sales from three dedicated rooms at Leyburn in Yorkshire.
But several years ago company chairman, Rodney Tennant, the third generation of the family, decided to expand the operation into a world class events centre by adding a wing that would give the building, set in spacious grounds in the Yorkshire Dales, three times the capacity (and cost £9m to realise).
In addition to the multipurpose 550-capacity Garden Rooms that could serve as a banqueting, concert and theatre space, the new wing would also incorporate new restaurants, lecture and seminar rooms and exhibition space.
He contacted Mark Parker of AV Matrix, based at nearby Wetherby, who knows the building implicitly after fitting out the original building when with his previous company. As on that occasion, he managed to source most of his loudspeaker requirements from the catalogue of RCF, one of his preferred long-term suppliers.
“I was conscious of budget, and the price to performance ratio had to be exactly right, and the speakers unobtrusive,” he said. Ticking those particular boxes he was able to specify RCF’s powerful C-series Acustica for the main ballroom/function room and between 70-80 PL 8X 8” + 1” flush mount coaxial ceiling speakers on a distributed system through many of the 16 zones into which the venue is divided.
While the sweeping staircase leads upstairs to viewing areas, a mezzanine gallery and three first floor meeting/seminar rooms, a roof terrace, private dining room and viewing gallery, downstairs are a dedicated restaurant, café and original sale rooms. However, the piéce de rèsistance is The Garden Rooms. With the partitions removed, this can open out into the adjoining Fountain and Versailles Rooms when the space can function in full concert mode.
In specifying a full sound, stage lighting and video package, with a contract value of £130K, Mark Parker knew that each of the many rooms had to communicate with any other, and that any signal source had to be routable via the processor to any destination.
“We worked with the M&E consultants and put a full cable spec together, including coax, SDI, 4-way audio and two CAT5 to every room and every TV position,” he explained.
To serve the many functions scheduled for The Garden Rooms are two pairs of RCF Acustica Compact C5212-64 (60° x 40°) and eight C3110-96 wall mounted distributed delay speakers and two S8018 MkII single 18in Acustica subs — part of an industry standard concert spec. Driving this system are RCF HPS 1500 (2 x 750W) and HPS 2500 (2 x 1400W) amplifiers.
Meanwhile, two RCF L-Pad 12CX 12-channel portable mixers (with effects) have been built into portable racks for manual mic mixing around the facility.
Up on the new outside terrace AV Matrix have installed eight of RCF’s IP55-rated indoor/outdoor MQ80P Indoor/Outdoor 2-way horn loaded speakers for background music and public address.
Explaining his choice of RCF products, Mark Parker states, “We’ve used Acustica many times over the years and installed them successfully in nightclubs and cabaret clubs. It’s a small footprint product for the sound it produces and it’s important that in addition to their excellent active speakers, RCF still offers a good quality passive solution — and one that is significantly less expensive than comparable models.
“The ceiling speakers offer extremely good value and the exterior speakers are simple and unobtrusive.”
The entire installation operates under Philips Control 4 with individual room touch control via iPod Touch — which enabled the installer to simply reconfigure the room settings as required.
Summing up, RCF’s Northern Sales Manager, Mick Butler says, “The quality of AV Matrix’s work is exemplary, and the profile this gives to RCF cannot be overstated.”

The Vienna City Marathon was held this year on April 12th, attracting over 42000 runners from all over to world to compete on a carefully planned track among Vienna’s most beautiful monuments, and supported by the excited cheer of the crowd. The audio system for the whole event was provided by local company Yoursolutions with RCF Touring and Theatre Series products, that were placed in various points throughout the 42 km of the itinerary.
Starting in Vienna International Centre, the marathon’s route crosses the Danube and gets to the green urban oasis of the Prater Park. Then it keeps running along the Danube’s canal until Ring Road, it continues from the State Opera until the Schonbrunn Palace, goes back towards the Ring and the Prater and ends at the finish line in Heldenplatz.
The start and finish of the marathon were equipped with 7 units of TTL55-A, 24 units of TTL33-A active three-way line array module, and 7 units of TTS36-A active high power subwoofer. RCF TT+ Series products were also placed in several intermediate points – namely TT22-A II and TT1-A active speakers, TTL31-A active line arrays, as well as TTS36-AS and TTS18-A active subwoofers. Moreover, a total of 52 units of RCF ART 312-A active three-way speaker were used to provide additional sound reinforcement for the public.

Installation
RCF D Line speakers were installed in the recently opened Epica nightclub in Okinawa, Japan.
Okinawa is the southernmost prefecture of Japan. It is warm all year round and attracts thousands of visitors each year thanks to its subtropical climate, green islands and touristic attractions. It is also an influential economical and industrial area for the whole country. Epica Okinawa nightclub opened in the prefecture’s capital city Naha in summer 2015. It is one of the largest nightclubs in the area, with a dancefloor more than 1000 square meters large, and strategically located only a few steps away from the famous sightseeing spot of International Street. The nightclub usually hosts about 1000 visitors per night during the weekend. Customers enjoy a cutting-edge interpretation of the latest trends in video and lighting, a large-sized LED screen and gorgeous VIP rooms. Several famous DJs, artists and entertainers were invited to the opening event starting from July 18th and lasting for 10 days. More than 2200 people attended the opening night on the first day.
The newly installed audio system includes 6 units (per side) of RCF HDL 20-A active line array in flying configuration on stage, and 4 stacked HDL 18-AS subwoofers per side. For an enhanced reproduction of low frequencies 2 additional HDL 18-AS subwoofers were installed under the bar counter right in front of the stage, on the other side of the dancefloor. Finally, the DJ booth is equipped with an RCF NX 12-SMA stage monitor and a NX S21-A active high-power subwoofer.
Despite its compact appearance, the HDL 18-AS is an extremely powerful subwoofer and left the artists very satisfied after the opening of Epica. The NX-12 SMA stage monitor and NXS 21-A subwoofer were praised by local DJs for their acoustic pressure and easiness of monitoring.

With over 40 years’ experience in providing technical services for the Irish market and beyond, Nolan Sound & Lighting recently extended its four year relationship with RCF by investing in the company’s HDL10-A compact line array.
Company director, Alan Nolan, has sold various brands of loudspeaker over the many years that he has worked in the business. But in RCF he has at last found a brand that is sufficiently versatile to suit all his clients. “The quality and convenience of RCF’s products, particularly the HDL10-A, is what makes them so great,” he says.
Based in Co. Westmeath, the company made its first investment in RCF’s stylish, composite enclosures back in March 2015, purchasing eight elements with a view to using the new rig as a four a side system for small/medium sized shows. They subsequently added a further eight HDL10-A enclosures, which they run with four SUB 8006-AS subwoofers.
“With this configuration we are covered for the majority of shows we do at this time of year,” states Nolan. However, the system size is set to increase further enabling them to have 16 boxes a side, accompanied by further SUB 8006-AS LF enclosures.
The HDL10-A was originally bought specifically due to the increase in attendance at shows by a group for which Nolan Sound provides full production. “Another reason was that it could be broken down in various configurations in order to fit the particular needs of different shows — such as two a side (pole mounted), four a side ground stacked and four to eight a side flown etc.”
Housing two 8in woofers, 2in compression driver, 1400W peak 2-way digital amplifier and powerful DSP processing, the ultra-compact size, unique composite cabinet design and fast rig/derig characteristics, make the HDL 10-A ideal in live sound reinforcement and reliable installed situations.
Aside from the quality of the product, the outstanding relationship that his company has with RCF was a further factor in the decision, he said. “The idea was that we would use and promote RCF as we are a registered supplier of RCF products in the Republic of Ireland.”
However, the use of RCF products by Nolan Sound & Light extends beyond the HDL10-A, as Alan Nolan explains. “Since our affiliation with RCF, we have used different RCF systems, the most recent being RCF TT25-A high power active system with TTS26-A subs.
“This system is ideal for 600-800 people in a concert setting — and it was the quality of this that convinced us to add the larger RCF system to our hire inventory.”
Installation
The SkyWay at Mont Blanc is equipped with an evacuation system by RCF, with the contribution of the installer company CED Impianti. A digital system RCF DXT 9000 certified in accordance with law EN54-16 was used for this engineering masterpiece.
"We already knew the DXT 9000 products", explains the installer Jacopo Franchin. "The central system is powerful, reliable and it is in accordance with sector regulations. It was a great choice from both the technical and commercial point of view." The installation in Mont Blanc is made up of three independent systems, one for each station, and is divided into separate zones corresponding to fire detection areas.
Three amplifying units were chosen from the MX 9504 series, one for each level of the new SkyWay cable car. The pre-recorded messages are in three languages instead of two, as usually occurs. "In the Aosta Valley French is spoken just as much as Italian and the SkyWay has a great influx of French speakers. For this reason the client also requested French as a language", explains the installer. The MX9504 units allow to send multiple messages simultaneously, in order to manage a well-organised evacuation of the various areas open to the public.
The powerful digital amplifiers used are RCF UP 9502 and 9504 models. The supply unit PS 4048 ensures continued power to the DXT 9000 system in case of network interruptions. The sound source is RCF MS1033 model, with integrated CD/mp3 player and a radio tuner. Microphones from the RDF BM 9800 series are also used. "Not only did we want a good evacuation system, but one that could also have a broader use for the diffusion of music or various types of messages," states engineer Petrella from Dimensione Ingenierie, that developed this project with RCF technical staff.
Three types of loudspeakers were chosen for their high-quality sound performance, UV- and weather-resistance – sound projector RCF DP1420 EN, speaker DU 50EN and horn speaker HD 21 EN.
It is worth noting that, in the case of the new SkyWay cable car at Mont Blanc, the normative method indicated by the regulations was not followed, but it was still possible to prove the conformity of the system thanks to the EASE sound simulation tool. The final project expects an average SPL that is more than 10 dB higher than the background noise, and therefore comes in the range established by the regulation. The average STI is higher than 0.5, with slight normal variations, calculated on 627 measurement points, resulting in great sound clarity and speech intelligibility.

RCF has announced a significant expansion of its UK operation, which will add new efficiencies and impetus to the company’s sales drive, as it continues to penetrate new market segments.
Central to the change is the appointment of industry stalwart Miles Brooke — who brings 20 years of experience in pro, commercial and consumer audio within the D&M Group.
Taking up the newly created position of Regional Sales Manager (South) he will focus on Installed Sound/Commercial Audio and Rental & Touring Customers, while Mick Butler will continue to represent RCF in the North of England and Scotland.
After a career dedicated to brand building Denon and Marantz — latterly as National Sales and Marketing Manager with D&M Group’s Professional Division — Miles Brooke brings the perfect pedigree. Prior to the formation of D&M he worked with Denon distributors Hayden Laboratories, a company he joined in 1994. “RCF’s diverse brand portfolio offers exciting challenges in market segments with which I am already familiar — and I look forward to increasing their market share,” he stated.
His arrival will enable the long-serving Dean Davoile to step up to Director of Sales for RCF’s UK office. “We are delighted to have secured the services of Miles as part of this carefully considered restructure, which will not only enable us to give closer support to our customers and sales network, but consolidate in all our core markets.”
Davoile takes up the senior position as Phil Price, who originally set up the RCF UK operation exactly 25 years ago, takes up a new role as RCF International Sales (Voice Evacuation Systems).
“RCF has made considerable investment in designing all new electronics that are fully certified to EN54 standards — which will particularly impact on the DXT 3000 and DXT 9000 digital evacuation systems,” he stated. “I am relishing the opportunity to build on this momentum.”
He added, “We need to identify and work with distribution partners and system integrators specifically within Europe to capitalise on our unique position of being able to offer complete solutions — based on our long heritage in loudspeaker systems and our new EN54 electronics.” All appointments apply with immediate effect.

The audio system for the Arena was developed with RCF products from the TT+ Series, especially conceived for big live events.
The performance by Lady Gaga with one of the “great voices” of American jazz, Tony Bennett, on stage at Santa Giuliana on 15 July, was one of the main events at the festival. The collaboration between the two singers originated from a friendship and artistic partnership that began in 2011 and led in 2014 to the release of the Cheek to Cheek album, winner of the Grammy Award. The concert attracted a very diverse audience, with long-standing jazz aficionados and young fans of the eccentric popstar, that gathered under the same sky in the Santa Giuliana Arena. As Lady Gaga herself declared on Umbria Jazz’s stage: “You might be wondering what I’m doing here”. However the thousands of fans that arrived in the city of Perugia were surprised and enchanted by a show in which the duo performed together or individually, offering a unique interpretation of some of the best-known American and international jazz songs.
We interviewed Michele Mongiello, PA manager of Santa Giuliana Arena, asking his opinion about the audio system, which was composed of 2 clusters of RCF TTL55-A (14 units each) as main reinforcement, 12 units of TTL33-A II as infill, 18 TTS56-A subwoofers on the ground and 6 units of TTL33-A II as sidefill and lipfill, for an optimal coverage of the first rows and sides.
The stage was also all RCF, with 8 units of TTP5-A and 2 TTS26-A subwoofers as stage sidefill, plus 16 TT25-SMA stage monitors — and as drumfill, 2 TT2-A speakers and 2 TTS26-A subwoofers.
D: Michele, how did you find the RCF system?
“I was positively impressed by the whole TT+ Series. The system is practical to put together, easy to use and simple to manage thanks to the RDNet system. The sound is nice and rich.”
D: Tell us about the way you used RDNet.
“I think it’s a great advantage. It is a really nice tool that allows access to each single speaker for equalisation, delay or other necessary adjustments. It is very useful when working in areas as big as this, because it allows the multiplication of lines and signals to be avoided. Here at Santa Giuliana Arena we set the subs in cardioid configuration and digitally delayed them, creating a 100-degree arc. Moreover I used RDNet to slightly correct the speaker functionality, bearing in mind the distance that they had to cover, because high-end frequencies tend to be less crisp in these warm and windy days.”
D: A wide range of diverse artists performed on stage, such as Italian band Subsonica, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, Italian composer Paolo Conte, Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, just to cite a few. What adjustments did sound engineers ask for?
“It is common for each sound engineer to have his specific needs and preferences. For instance the sound engineer of Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga asked for an equalization on the high frequencies of the frontfill, to darken them slightly.”
D: How did you get on with RCF TT25-SMA stage monitors?
“I had already used them on other occasions. I am satisfied, they were very flat and I managed to get the right frequency response by just opening the channel.”

The common goal was to provide a very accurate result, ensuring an excellent sound quality to all seats at Santa Giuliana Arena.
“During the first night, when Paolo Conte was on stage, the RCF system performed very well with the musical texture of the composer, which was characterized by acoustic sounds and precise melodies,” states Mr. Tordini. “Then, with the electronic band Subsonica, the style changed noticeably, and kept on varying during the following nights, with Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, and many more. The RCF TT+ Series system proved to be versatile, powerful and high-quality, and was always up to the requirements of the artists on stage.”

RCF will take full advantage of the sound demo possibilities on offer at this year’s adjoining BPM DJ & Electronic Music Production Event and PRO Performance & Venue Technology Shows, at Birmingham NEC (September 12-14).
In BPM’s PA Experience sound demonstration area — set up as a purpose built gig sized area — they will turn on both EVOX 12 and ART735A.
EVOX 12 is the most powerful line source in its class, with built-in 1400W power amplifier. The top section has eight high performance neodymium 4” full range transducers with a phase plug while the 15” subwoofer delivers powerful low frequency sound to reinforce a dance party or kick drum of a live band. Despite its high performance EVOX 12 is compact and easy to transport.
The ART 735-A is also unique in its category, the titanium dome, 3” voice coil and neo-compression driver offering unique vocal clarity and projection while the 15in woofer offers a linear response and precise deep, low frequency control, powered by DSP-controlled 1400W amplifier.
RCF themselves will be based at booth # F021 in the PRO zone. Meanwhile in the PRO Audio Demo Space RCF will demonstrate its classy TTL6-A, a three-way line source which was added to the Theatre & Touring range earlier this year. It is equipped with 2 x 12” woofers for bass, 4 x 6.5” midrange and a 2” compression driver with waveguide for directivity.
Other new speakers that can be seen in static form at their booth will be the ART732-A multi-purpose full range speaker with punchy bass. The large compression driver with 3” voice coil enables great HF projection for larger or crowded venues.
Further products from the TT+ range, MkII versions of the TT22-A and TT25-A, will also be shown. The former is a flexible, high definition system housing high quality transducers (including 12” neodymium woofer) and an 1100W Class D amp, and the latter contains a similar power source, but with a 15” neodymium woofer.
Finally, RCF will present its new M series digital M18 wi-fi mixer, launched earlier this year, which marks a real breakthrough for the company.
