When the Greek Orthodox Church of Evangelism of Holy Mary in Pili Dervenohorion was seeking a sound system that would give them greater intelligibility in a highly reverberant environment, installers Kariotis Bros Co turned to an RCF solution.
As the Italian manufacturer’s distributor in Greece, Kariotis knew that a combination of eight L2406T compact three-way column arrays would deliver the spoken word with crystal clarity while the slim column profile would not intrude on the church’s murals and frescos. At the same time they chose eight elements of RCF MQ-100L columns for use in the church’s secondary annex.
Kariotis had already made a sound study of the church two years previously … but unhappy with the solution provided by the competitive bidder on that occasion the church called Kariotis back in and asked them to design a superior reference sound system.
Since Orthodox churches reproduce only the spoken word and choral music, rather than recorded sounds or musical instruments Kariotis turned to high quality supercardioid mics for the cantors and highly sensitive mic caps for the priest — reinforced with high standards of power amplifiers, dynamic vocal processors, feedback eliminators, sound mixer and of course RCF L2406T columns for the main temple and RCF MQ 100L for the secondary room. A further point in favour of the RCF solution was that the priest was already familiar with the brand.
“Royal cathedral churches in Greece historically have a huge problem with echo reproduction and so the most important issue was to get the clearest sound reproduction of the voices in all spaces, as well as zero feedback from the speakers,” said Pandelis Kariotis, the installation company's general manager. “Automatic correction of any bad sound effect was the criteria of our installation.”
He said that the RCF L Series had ticked all the boxes. “It not only suited the architecture but the L2406T is a very efficiency column array speaker. The vertical dispersion can manage coverage over huge heights such as this; also the reproduction of vocals is very dynamic and clear.”
Equally successful was the installation of the eight MQ 100L 3-way column elements — again meeting the critical acoustical criteria and managing the architectural constraints, with its wide horizontal coverage angle of 180° and vertical dispersion of 60° filling the wide space.
Pandelis Kariotis himself designed the RCF solution, based on careful analysis, while sales manager and technical supervisor, Giannis Stathis took responsibility for the filtering systems and selection of the preamps, mics and mixer.
In conclusion, Mr. Kariotis said, “In the two or three days after replacing the old sound system the church was constantly full of worshippers. So I guess that says something.”

RCF TT+ demo at the Asakusa Jazz Contest
RCF, Japanese distributor Ballad Co. Ltd. recently did a RCF TT+ demo at the 31st Annual Asakusa Jazz Contest in Asakusa, Tokyo.
“The customer was very impressed with the sound. He said that he was blown away by the clarity in the mid-high range and had never gotten an acceptable piano sound in such a short time before. He also commented that it was so easy to hear the different characteristics of each microphone he used on the various instruments. This is something fairly unique to the TT+ range in my opinion as well. He also used the TT052 along with the TTL33-A for in-fills”, says Zach from Ballad Co. Ltd.

RCF TT+ Line Array System on board Viking Line M/S Rosella
Viking Line commenced service in 1959, when the S/S Viking began sailing between the Finnish mainland, the Åland Islands and Sweden. Today Viking Line has seven vessels, which sail between the Finnish mainland, Åland and Sweden as well as between Finland and the Baltic states. Operations include passenger services, recreation and cargo carrier services.
After renewing M/S Rosella’s dance restaurant to the height of two floors, Mr. Jouni Sironen, the AV Manager of Viking Line, was looking after the Line Array set, which could support live music and entertainment. After few demo listenings, RCF TTL 31A was chosen for the new system.
The system consists of rigged TTL 12AS and (4) TTL 31A per side and TTS 28A subs in the center ground stack to produce the perfect bass coverage. (4) RCF C 3108W delay speakers fill the back parts of low height first floor.
RCF’s Finnish distributor Noretron Communication Ltd supplied the equipments and the installation was carried out by the Viking Line’s own technical team and Noretron’s personnel. Two days in Estonian dockyard and the installers and the users were more than satisfied with TT+.

RCF TT+ System Provides Support For Philip Glass Ensemble.
The Philip Glass Ensemble along with the New York Philharmonic orchestra and the Collegiate Choir recently performed Philip Glass's powerful music for the 1982 Godfrey Reggio film "Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out Of Balance" at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center. The landmark film was projected on a large screen above the stage throughout the performance.
Simon Nathan, owner of Audio Production Services of Amawalk, NY, worked closely with Dan Dryden, FOH engineer for the Philip Glass Ensemble, to design the sound system for the event.
"Because Avery Fisher hall is home to the Philharmonic, it doesn't have an in-house system that could handle this performance," explains Nathan. "We were asked to provide a high quality system that could cover the entire hall without impeding any stage site lines and provide clean, consistent sound throughout the room."
The choice was the compact RCF TT+ Series, with single arrays each comprised of 10 TTL31-A modules flown left and right, attached to the overhead stage grid.
"When specifying systems for the ensemble I'm looking for smaller line arrays with flat frequency response," explains Dryden. "These were perfect. The low-mid frequencies are rich and warm, and the coverage was excellent.”
The overall footprint of these arrays was relatively small, measuring just less than two feet wide by only about 10 feet deep. The self-powered, 2-way active line array modules are outfitted with a single-8-inch cone driver and three compression drivers feeding a horn with horizontal dispersion of 100 degrees. They proved capable of covering all four levels of seating (main and three balconies) as well as boxes.
"When specifying systems for the Ensemble I'm looking for smaller line arrays with flat frequency response," explains Dryden. "These were perfect. The low-mid frequencies are rich and warm and the coverage was excellent. I was very pleased with the result."
The mains were joined by four TTS56-A dual 21-inch subwoofers, two side-by-side on each side of the stage, and each of these sub sets hosted a single TT25 compact powered loudspeaker supplying in fill presence, particularly for higher frequencies. The house loudspeaker complement was completed with front fill via four TT052-A low-profile 2-way loudspeakers deployed evenly along the front lip of the stage.
"The hall seats 2,800 with 3 balconies and box seats – it is a very large room," adds Nathan. "The arrays had no problem throwing all of the way to the back row of the top balcony without any need for delay fills. We had plenty of power for the space."
"This system was right up there with its more well-known competitors," Dryden concludes. "I will be adding it to my riders for future Philip Glass Ensemble events – I would definitely use it again."

Peter Brander’s Media Sound upgrades the studio with RCF Mytho.
One of Denmark’s finest guitarists and one of the hardest working personalities in the music business – is one and the same person.
He produced and recorded more than a 1000 albums, more than 5000 live gigs and 42 different guitars in his collection – Peter Brander is a legend in the Danish music industry.
As producer Peter Brander has left his unmistakable fingerprints on dozens of the most well-known Danish rock classics. Peter Brander has been, and still is the indispensable sound-maker for a number of Danish rock – and pop-icons, both as a producer in the studio, as soundman by a vast number of concerts, or as guitarist and back-up singer on records or live. Furthermore he has been recorded and produced several international acts and famous for his incredible rock mixing.
It all started 34 years ago with the Rock Tape studio – a humble facility that quickly became the studio to be at if you wanted the right rock sound. The studio was pure analogue put the studio produced albums with such a clear sound that everyone actually believed that it was digital recordings.
“I have always been very keen in my choice of recording gear and have learnt to get the most out of it. With Rock Tape it was all based on old equipment and a good spirit to tweak it and get the noise away – so it sounded more modern”, says Peter Brander with a smile.
To step out of the rock image the studio changed its name to Medias Sound Studios and slightly began to upgrade the studio with additional mixing rooms and added a lot of new equipment and digital technology.
“Over the years we did more pop and jazz recording sessions but luckily we maintained our positions as one of the preferred rock recording studio and with this I took the decision to move to a brand new facility to cut down to two mixing rooms and one big recording area”, says Peter Brander.
Media Sound Studio then went through a major upgrade by adding a big SSL console to the main mixing room, lots of outboard gear and upgrading their digital recording system.
The client list at the Media Sound Studios is long and several platinum and gold records are nicely placed on the walls of the studio with artists such as: Big Fat Snake, Kashmir, Dizzy Mizz Lizzy, DAD, Michael Falch, Sort Sol, Walter Trout, Erann DD, Peter Viskinde, Nikolaj & Piloterne, Royal Hunt, Outlandish, Mike Tramp, White Lion, Nerve, Innocent Blood, Rockers by Choice, DJ Encore, Seven Thorns, The North, Lars H.U.G and more.
In 2011 the Media Sound Studios was upgraded with a new mastering suite and recently installed a pair of RCF Mytho studio monitors.
”I have been searching for the right monitor solutions for the mastering suite for a long time. Tested several near field monitors without finding the right one to match and work perfectly with the old stuff we already have. Then I got recommended to try the RCF Mytho speaker and got in contact with SC Sound (Danish RCF distributor) that supplied the speakers. When I played the first track on the speakers I must say that I was extremely positive surprised. I have known the RCF brand for many years from the live stages as FOH and musician, and with a good respect – but my knowledge of their studio monitors was none. Here I was sitting and listening to speakers with such a clarity and good separation between the high, mid and low sections. Am I listening to a near field speaker I was thinking, since the sound was so powerful but still clear in all aspects. Right away I said: This is my new monitors and they are now installed at the mastering suite, and I will get some pairs to my other studio rooms for sure”, says Peter Brander.
Product specialist Lars Holm from SC Sound supplied the speakers and he also helped with the fine-tuning.
“It is inspiring to be able to deliver a modern studio monitor product to Peter Brander and his Media Sound. This studio has so much legacy and especially with the long list of professional musicians that over the years has found their way to do recordings in the studio”, says Lars Holm – SC Sound
Beside the studio work Peter Brander still finds time to perform on stage with his own repertoire, 4 solo albums have been released and the recent double album “No Compromises” has received great reviews and have praised it as one of the year's best West Coast blues releases in 2011.
With this Peter Brander will be touring in 2012 featuring musicians: Kasper Foss, Jimmy Ostbygaard, Soren Kuhle, Anne Murillo & Gry Trampedach.
“It is always a pleasure to perform on stage and as a FOH engineer I always dig into what sound system that are used on the tour. I heard the RCF TT+ system earlier this year at a demo in Copenhagen and it was impressive. The system is very compact and able to supply a high sound pressure without compromises, exactly as my new RCF Mytho speakers. So I would definitely think about this, so I can bring my studio sound on the road. I like that”, says Peter Brander.
